How Many Types of Ringtones Are There?

Thinking of changing your default mobile phone ringtone to reflect your personality?

In the old days mobiole phones came with a limited factory preset  list of ringtones  which you could switch to if you become bored with one of them.

These days you’ve the flexibility of choosing any portion of an audio track as your preferred ringtone.  You may even assign a different ringtones for different people in your contact list. When a call comes in, you don’t have to look at your telephone screen to find who’s calling especially when you’re driving.

It pays to learn the different type of ringtones available to better understand what yyou will be in to.

Basically, there are three different types of ringtones commonly used  you need to be aware of.

Monophonic Ringtone

This is the earliest form of ringtone to hit the market.   It plays only one note at any one time.

Older Nokia, Motorola and Siemens phone use this type of ringtone.

Polyphonic Ringtone

This ringtone is capable of playing several notes and different types of music instruments at any one time.

A polyphonic ringtone is based on MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface)

Realtone Ringtones

This is the type of ringtone found in modern mobile phones. They sound like actual audio recordings.

They are usually in the MP3 AAC or OGG Vorbis formats.

Realtone Ringtones have paved the way for users to make their own ringtones with the aid of tools like MP3 cutters.
