How to Start Video Editing From Scratch

What you Need

Some folks assume if you've a computer, you could start video editing right away. Sorry to say, most computers are not video-ready.

It  doesn't mean you have to buy a new video editing computer to get going. You could upgrade your computer a little to make it ready for video editing. How do you go about it?

Let's now look at  the two important ingredients to get started - a video source and a computer.

A video source could come in the form of a video camera or VHS player. That's not really the difficult part. It's how you transfer video footage into the computer that needs your serious consideration

Video Capture Card

You need  a video capture card or device installed in your computer to get started. The capture card is to bring video from your camera or VHS player and store it in the hard disk. The type of card you need will depend on whether you're capturing  analog or digital video. If you're transferring video from a VHS player then it's analog video. If you're transferring from video from a mini-DV or Digital 8 camera, then you're capturing digital video in which case you'll only need a firewire capture device.

Video Editing Software

Yo
u would also need a video editing software to grab the captured video from the hard disk and manipulate it - make cuts, add audio add titles etc. If you run Windows XP, it comes bundled with a video editing software called Moviemaker. Otherwise, it comes bundled with your video capture device. Video editing software also helps with the process of copying back edited footage to tape in your camcorder or VHS player.

Disc Authoring Software

After you have done the necessary editing, you'll want to ouput your  video to disc  and make a VCD or DVD. For this you would need a disc-authoring software. Before you run out and buy one, check out your editing software - most come with a disc-authoring feature .

CD/DVD Burner/Writer

This is where you record video from your computer on to a blank disc - DVD or CD so that you can view them on television with the help of a DVD player.  Most entry-level computers come with a CD-Writer. However, if you would like to  create DVDs, then you would have to upgrade to a DVD writer which you could also use to create VCD or SVCD.

Well, that's what you basically need to start video editing. If you get the idea, move on to Optimizing Your Computer For Video Editing.
