What is H263 and what are its uses?
H263 is a low-bit-rate video coding standard designed for such use as video conferencing, video telephony and MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service).
Its compression structure is based on H261, but it offers superior picture quality at lower bit rates.
H263 was developed VCEG (Video Coding Experts Group). It was first developed in 1996 and the final version emerged in January 2005.
It is the SVH (Short Video Header) mode of the MPEG-2 standard.
`H263 is commonly used in the 3GP container format.
RealVideo’s original codec version was based on H263 before the launch of RealVideo8.
H263 found popular use in Flash Video in the days when YouTube, Google Video and MySpace used the FLV format.
Videos were encoded in Sorenson Spark a variant of the H263 codec
Please note that H.263 deals with the visual side of a video signal only. The audio part is encoded separately with AMR compression.
